Joan Roig i Soler

He began his training as a pupil of Modest Urgell an later went to Paris and Rome before going to live for a few years on the coasts of Italy and Andalusia.
In 1880 he settled in Sitges with the painter Antoni Mas i Fontdevila and put all the experience of his travels into works that may be regarded as the beginnings of Catalan Luminist painting,
characterised by their great vitality and the force of their colours (Pagès català [Catalan Farmer], 1888; MNAC collection).
Throughout his career he concentrated on the landscapes of his surroundings, the Costa Brava, Sitges and the mountain area, as well as the urban spaces of Barcelona (Platja de Vilanova [Vilanova Beach], 1883-1885; MNAC collection).
He presented works at several exhibitions in Spain and abroad and was almost always awarded a prize or a mention.
