Josep Maria Tamburini i Dalmau

Painter and sculptor
Barcelona (1856) - (1932)

He studied at La Llotja, the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, and was a pupil of the painter Antoni Caba. He later went to Paris, where he studied with Léon Bonnat, and travelled to Rome and Naples. These periods away from Barcelona enabled him to become acquainted with the work of the Symbolists and the Pre-Raphaelites.
Following an initial phase linked to Realism, in the 1890s he began a stage in which he worked within a Symbolist aesthetic framework. This is apparent in the subject matter chosen and in his treatment of it, particularly the female figure, almost always using the pastel technique. Works such as Harmonies del bosc (Forest Harmonies, 1896) and La fugida a Egipte (The Flight to Egypt, 1911); both in MNAC collection, clearly show the influence of Symbolism.
He also did illustrations for magazines such as La Il·lustració Artística, L'Avenç and Álbum Salon, and was involved in the world of literature, writing poems and articles on art.
He was a fine arts teacher and also taught at the Women's Professional School. He participated in many exhibitions, not just in Barcelona, but also in Madrid, Brussels and Mexico, which earned him a high degree of professional recognition.
