Members of a long line of goldsmiths established in Barcelona since the middle of the 18th century, the brothers Joaquim and Francesc d'Assís Carreras i Nolla worked together between 1890 and 1910 interpreting the Modernista forms in their workshop at Carrer de Ferran, 44, in Barcelona.
The piece for which they were most famous was the crown of the Lady of Mercy in Canet de Mar, designed by R. Capmany in 1906, with an appearance close to Modernisme. Their production centred on items of great quality with Modernista designs and subjects such as fairies, flowers, etc., often designed by artists such as J. Pascó.
In 1915, one of the brothers, Joaquim, who specialised more in stones, left the family business to go into partnership with L. Masriera, with whom he set up the company Masriera i Carreras, SA, while the other brother continued in the family business.
