
He qualified first as a master builder and later, in 1879, as an architect. As a result of his training, like many architects of that time he designed buildings of a rather severe style. However, during the period when Modernisme emerged, he used floral ornamentation on his works, such as the former Hostafrancs Deputy Mayor's building (1895; 1908-1915; Creu Coberta, 106; currently the Sants-Montjuïc district offices of Barcelona City Council), which he reformed with U. Iranzo. Gradually, however, his style evolved. His compositions lost their rigidity to suit the demands of his customers, Barcelona's upper middle classes.
