Joan Vilatobà i Fígols

Photographer and painter
Sabadell (1878) - (1954)

A member of a family of painters and draughtsmen, he began his training in the same field as a pupil of Modest Urgell and Josep Lluís Pellicer. He stayed for a time in Paris and also Germany, where Symbolist painting made a big impact on him.
In 1901 he went back to the town where he had been born, opened a photography studio and specialised in portraits and Romantic landscapes that are reminiscent of his teacher, M. Urgell. In 1904 he won his first prizes as a photographer and started to become very successful.
His production is characterised by compositions of a Symbolist nature and the quality of his portraits, which were highly innovative, especially for the settings he chose.
