Pau Salvat i Espasa

Architect, art critic and publisher
Barcelona (1872) - (1923)

A member of the Salvat Espasa family, linked to the world of publishing, he qualified as an architect in Barcelona in 1894 and started working for the Oller family on Casa Oller (1900; Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 658) thoroughly renovating an existing building the interior of which was decorated by G. Homar and S. Oller. The influence of the architect J. Puig i Cadafalch can be seen in these early works, although only in their spatial and structural aspects, not their ornamental features.
He constructed the building for his own publishing
house, Editorial Salvat (1912-1916; Mallorca, 45-49), which won the annual prize awarded by Barcelona City Council for the best building of the year in 1916, and Casa Salvat (1912; Calàbria, 191-193).
He worked as an art critic and carried on the family publishing business. He later became chairperson of the Institute of Book Arts and published a large number of works on art and architecture. He was also chairperson of the Architects' Association of Catalonia, during which time he wrote several articles in La Veu de Catalunya dealing with the subject of architecture in Barcelona.
