Sociedad Alarma i Moragas

Stage designers

This company, founded in 1889 by S. Alarma and M. Moragas - nephew and uncle respectively -, produced important stage designs for the Gran Teatre del Liceu (Rambla, 51-59), Teatre Romea (Hospital, 51) and other theatres, with a personal style characterised by the use of a great deal of light and the vividness of the colours of its sets. The set with which they achieved great success and prestige was El diorama animat (The Animated Diorama, 1902), a show that recreated popular scenes.
They were also involved in decorating establishments which became extremely popular at that time, such as the ballroom La Paloma (1903; Tigre, 27); the bar La Luna (1909; Rambla de Catalunya - Plaça de Catalunya; no longer in existence), with which they won the prize awarded each year by Barcelona City Council for the best decoration of commercial establishments, and Cine Doré (1910; Rambla de Catalunya - Ronda de la Universitat; no longer in existence).
