The Barcelona Modernisme Route is an itinerary through the Barcelona of Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch, who together with other architects, made Barcelona the great capital of Catalan Art Nouveau. With this route you can discover impressive palaces, amazing houses, the temple that is symbol of the city and an immense hospital, as well as more popular and everyday works such as pharmacies, shops, bars, streetlights or benches. Modernisme works that show that Art Nouveau took root in Barcelona and even today is still a living art, and part of the city’s everyday life.

Els artistes que van treballar al Recinte Modernista de l’Hospital de Sant Pau van impulsar un monument en homenatge a Pau Gil, mecenes de l’hospital. Presidit pel seu bust, el conjunt inclou una al·legoria de la caritat amb figures que representen les tres etapes de la vida. L’obra va ser dissenyada per Eusebi Arnau i esculpida per Josep Casau i Matamala.

Una de les moltes peculiaritats del Recinte Modernista de de Sant Pau és que Lluís Domènech Montaner va dissenyar el complex hospitalari disgregant les instal·lacions en diversos edificis independents concebuts sota criteris de salubritat, amb molta llum solar i aire fresc. Hi ha més de vint pavellons!

La ceràmica és una de les grans protagonistes del Recinte Modernista de de Sant Pau, decorant tant façanes com interiors. Mosaics, de colors vius i formes florals, ubicats per exemple als espais del Pavelló de l’Administració, construït entre 1905 i 1910.

El 15 de gener de 1902, gràcies al llegat del banquer Pau Gil, es col·locava la primera pedra del nou Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. Aquest nou centre hospitalari havia de prendre el relleu de les antigues instal·lacions gòtiques del Raval, que ja havien quedat desfasades.
