Modernisme Route

The Barcelona Modernisme Route is an itinerary that takes you through the Barcelona of Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch, the architects who, together with others, made Barcelona the world capital of Modernisme. This Route enables you to get to know thoroughly impressive palatial residences, amazing houses, the temple that has become a symbol of the city and a huge hospital, but it also includes humbler and more everyday buildings and items such as chemists’, shops, lampposts and benches – 120 works in all which show that Art Nouveau put down strong roots in Barcelona and today Modernisme is still an art that is alive and part of life in the city.

To do the itinerary you will have to buy a copy of the Modernisme Route guidebook –the most comprehensive one on the Modernisme in Barcelona- which you can find in all the best bookshops and all the Modernisme Centres. The guidebook includes discounts of up to 50% on the admission charge to all the Modernista monuments in the city as well as for local routes in another thirteen municipalities in Catalonia. At any of the City Council’s Modernisme Centres you will also be able to buy the full Route pack, which, in addition to the guidebook, includes:

  • A book of discount vouchers.
  • A Barcelona Modernisme Route map showing all 120 works.
  • Let’s go out, a guide to Modernista bars and restaurants.
  • A map of Barcelona showing the bars and restaurants in the Let’s go out listings magazine.

In addition, you can follow the route with the aid of signs on the ground that are part of the very urban landscape of the city. These are  small red paving stones set into the pavement that mark out the main sections of the Route’s and go past the Modernista works on the rest of the itinerary.

The Modernisme Route was organised by the Municipal Institute for Urban Landscape and Quality of Life, with the support of the Route’s Honorary Council in line with its work for the protection, diffusion and improvement of the urban landscape of the city.

All profits from the sale of the Modernisme Route guidebook go towards protecting the city’s Modernista heritage.

The guidebook

As the name suggests, this is the book that will accompany you on your way round the Route, which includes 120 different items, regarded as the most important in Barcelona.

To make discovering Barcelona’s Modernista heritage easier for you, the guidebook is structured round a single recommended itinerary with sections branching off it to take in all of the works. The whole route, including visits to all the monuments open to the public, could take between four days and a week to complete.

As an introduction to Modernisme in Barcelona, or for those who only have a few hours to spare, the Modernismee Route recommends the Barcelona Walking Tours organised by Barcelona Tourist Board that start from the Information Office in Plaça de Catalunya.

For those of you who only have one day, the guidebook suggests the One Day Route which leaves out all the branches off the main route. It can be completed in a day and also gives you time to visit one of the monuments open to the public. To take advantage of the natural light, during the winter we recommend completing the whole route first and then going back to visit the inside of the monument of your choice.

For those of you who prefer to get to know Barcelona’s Modernista masterpieces without following a pre-set route, here is a list of the thirty most recommended monuments:

The “Guapos per sempre” (Pretty Forever) chapter gives you a selection of shops and other establishments recognised for their beautiful decoration and also for the quality of their products and service.

And to complement the beauty of Barcelona’s architecture and get to know Catalan Modernisme in its true dimensions, the chapter “Més enllà de Barcelona” (Beyond Barcelona) invites you to visit other towns in Catalonia and discover their Modernista treasures.

Opening times for the different buildings and museums may vary according to the season. It is a good idea to confirm times before starting the route.
